If you’re a fan of vintage performance bikes, the 1984 Kawasaki KR250 is a machine that deserves attention. With just 18,759 km on the clock and in impressive overall condition for its age, this example captures the spirit of an era when lightweight two-strokes ruled the road and the track.
Notable Features and Pricing
Born from Grand Prix Dominance
To celebrate four years of dominance in 250cc Grand Prix racing, Kawasaki developed the KR250 as a road-going tribute to its championship winning machines. Inspired by the bikes ridden by Kork Ballington and Anton Mang, the KR250 brought genuine racing DNA to the street.
Released locally as the KR250A1, it wasn’t a full race bike but it was purpose built to compete in the highly competitive 250cc Production class, especially popular across Australasia.
Performance and Competition
The KR250 entered a fiercely contested segment, going head-to-head with rivals like the Suzuki RG250 and Yamaha RZ250. In terms of weight, Kawasaki struck a balance at 134 kg slotting neatly between its competitors at 131 kg and 145 kg respectively.
All three machines delivered similar performance figures, producing around 24.5 kW at the rear wheel. What set the KR250 apart, however, was its unique engineering and unmistakable racing pedigree.
Condition and Features
This particular KR250 presents very well:
Paintwork is in excellent condition overall, with only minor clear coat peeling on the headlight fairing
Wheels would benefit from a sand and polish
Tyres retain approximately 90% tread
Mechanically sound starts, runs, and rides without issue
Fully serviced and test ridden
Includes original owner’s manual
A Rare Find
The KR250 is a rare sight today, especially in this kind of condition. As a distinctive two-stroke with direct ties to Kawasaki’s racing success, it offers both collector appeal and an engaging riding experience.
